Former England soccer boss Sven Goran Eriksson bid £90,000 for a football - made of Swarovski crystal.
Sven, 59, now £2million-a-year manager of Manchester City, had guests gasping in disbelief at the charity auction.
And he only backed off when a rival bidder for the huge shiny artwork - signed by England stars David Beckham and Alan Shearer - went to £95,000. Instead, the Swede paid £31,000 for another item at last week's Professional Footballers' Association auction dinner for Manchester Children's Hospital.
A pfa spokesman said: "Sven really enjoyed the evening to celebrate our centenary and raise money for charity. He was very generous."
